The Individual Support Programme (ISP) sits within the School of Medicine at Cardiff University. The ISP provides assessment and remediation for doctors who are struggling with their performance.
Since its inception in 2001 the programme has received over 200 referrals ranging from undergraduates to consultants. The ISP provides a 'needs' assessment and structured remediation. The service works closely with both the undergraduate and postgraduate deaneries in Wales and also receives referrals from individual trusts across the UK and organisations such as the National Clinical Assessment Service (NCAS).
The service is led by an occupational health physician, and supported by a GP with occupational health experience, two occupational psychologists a health psychologist and a language specialist. Health and wellbeing are considered from the outset. Personal and occupational histories are taken and the occupational psychologist and language specialist provide input. Where health issues predominate, specialist opinions such as neuropsychologists or psychiatrists are obtained.
Using behaviour change methodologies, remediation builds upon existing strengths and develops broader communication and self management skills. Methods are tailored to individual needs, personality and learning style. Remediation can include coaching, role play, video feedback of mock consultations with actors and significant event review. Furthermore, detailed return to work plans may be implemented with any adjustments developed following close liaison with deaneries and trusts.
